Great stuff. And, yeah, I hate how they are hiding the info from us.

I was sufing in Waikiki the week before his attack. The local news had reported a large "aggressive" tiger shark was spotted in the shore break about three miles from us. Not sure what they meant by aggressive?! Anyway, I was a bit sketched floating between sets. Then to hear this. So sad. Prayers to his family and friends.

Preach, brother. I have been interested in sharks since I was a boy and as the years went by I got more and more pissed with these apologists. They have managed to bring into the public consciousness this idea of the benign shark that doesn't want to attack and "only" attacks due to mistaken identity. This may all be relatively without consequences for your regular land dweller that hardly ever visits the ocean, it becomes something very different when surfers in Australian waters comfort themselves with those nonsensical statistics about "it is more likely to be struck by lightning than to be attacked by a shark" nonsense that may (who knows) be correct for an average land dweller, but certainly not for guys who spend hours and hours far off shore in some of the most dangerous waters in the world. And yes, I have seen surfers in forums throw this nonsense around and I dare say more than just some have ended in a shark's stomach because of this false "education". How else do we explain that apparently British expats are very prone to reckless behavior such as swimming across the bay in byron Bay on a daily base or entering the water in South Africa even though sharks were spotted? The whole mistaken identity nonsense seems to suggest that large predatory fish in the ocean will not attack a human for some supernatural reasons. Although it is never explained in such a fashion - why would sharks not attack us if they attack cattle, dogs etc. that for some reason end up in the ocean. They are just large fish with sharp teeth - of course with feeding preferences, but still opportunistic, some more than others. I love sharks but I'm scared of them and always think about what kind of sharks are present in the waters I set foot into and take other measures to reduce the probability of ending as fish food. Keep up the good work!

It's their ocean. They own it. We just visit. We don't get to make the rules. Man does not own the planet. He shares it .He just thinks he got divine providence.. Ohhhh well!

Think you need to stop researching shark attacks as it stops you enjoying the sea! The number of shark attacks is relatively low in comparison to traffic accidents or even pet dog attacks on owners! Most sharks are not out to eat humans, a healthy fear or respect is good but getting consumed by the probability of being attacked by a shark is not healthy

Whilst your video is interesting, sharks just need to be respected like any other wild animal. Hopefully you get over your fear of maneaters

Hey Hal, seems as if you have given up your twice a week videos for fishing with you Dad. That is wonderful in its own right, however, there are those of us who have literally been with you from day one! I miss your research, your charts and your enthusiasm. But if your wife is OK with supporting your home and kitties, well I’ll butt out.

It's probably a bull shark, Hal, regarding the shark attack incident in Biloxi, Mississippi. It's pronounced Ba Luxx E. I live in New Orleans, and have been there several times. It's a little less than a 1.5 hr drive from New Orleans via Interstate 10, depending on traffic. . Great video. Thanks.

Hey Hal I was watching a video and I want to say it was the Discovery channel or something like that. Ok...one of the things they mention is off the coast of Calif has more shark attacks than Australia or Africa. I think it was Montego Bay or something like that. Not sure on the name but I did find it off that CA would have more than Australia

Yeah. I never swim in the ocean unless there's lots of people around me, because predators are less likely to attack whenever there are many people in the water. It's more risky for them, so they'll tend to pick someone who is off by themselves or way Further out from everyone else. I always make sure there's someone further out than myself when I'm in the ocean. Since people change locations all the time in the water, if I notice there's suddenly hardly anyone near me, I go in. Since my daughter's usually with me, I say "come on. we're going over there to be with that group of people. This story is an example of how someone's been doing something a long time, and they start forgetting the safety restraints, just like people do in so many different hobbies and occupations. A guy that's been doing construction for a long time, so he's more comfortable, may skip using an anchor line or wearing his helmet, and then something happens to him, for example. I work in the laboratory, so there are certain universal precautions you must take with others' tissue and body fluids. one might stop doing some of those because he gets really comfortable In that environment. I have seen it a million times. it sounds like that might have been the headspace this guy was in. Please don't ever swim at twilight or dusk or by yourself. also, don't wear yellow or red or things that are really shiny and flashy, like fish scales. Avoid those flashy bathing suits, people.

I did enjoy this, thank you. That captain at the end was fascinating dude. He’s caught my fascination. (And i will just bet you HE was the one who suggested to the authorities , the title of ‘Captain’’ for himself. I know this guy ! I’m gonna go check him out. One of tjise quirky attention seekers. I love them-he sounds like a showman. My father was a showman-(but literally- a big carnival operator, biggest in Australia, and loved the stage and did quirky, quirky stuff, in sideshow alley and on the stage. So i have a big tolerance for quirky self-made public figures… was….Classic). But you know what i reckon? I reckon, if someone swims out to the ocean ON HIS OWN, in a freaking rubber suit and nothing else, CARRYING a torpedo, and then put the torpedo ONTO a ship, and that ship SINKS - he can call himself anything he bloody -well likes in my book, He has bloody- earned it. Jayus.

I believe the shark drug the victim “far and wide,” because of the other sharks trying to prey on the person, so the shark was basically running with the body trying to keep the victim for itself. It sounds like it lost that battle and all the sharks ended up in a feeding frenzy. I hope the victim was gone by then. Yikes!! Thanks Hal for the opportunities to die vicariously in shark attacks. Nothing like it!!
